Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer

What is Talcum Powder?

Talcum powder is a popular hygiene product made from talc, a mineral mainly comprised of magnesium, silicon and oxygen. Talcum powder works to absorb moisture, making it incredibly useful to keep the skin dry and also prevent rashes. Talcum powder is used in cosmetic and hygiene products such as facial powders, adult body and baby powder.

Talcum Powder Lawsuit

There has been a link between the use of talcum powder and cancer. There are two types of talc – one that contains asbestos and one that doesn’t. Talc that contains asbestos is linked to cause cancers around the lungs if it’s inhaled. However, this talc is not used in the modern consumer products, and hasn’t been used since the 1970s. There are still questions as to whether asbestos-free talc is also linked to cancer.

The two most common types of cancer associated with using talc are ovarian and lung cancer. Because of the areas in which baby powder is often applied, the powder can be exposed to women’s ovaries.

In 1971, a study revealed that talcum powder was in around 75% of ovarian cancer cases. Because of the serious risks of talcum powder, manufacturers such as Johnson & Johnson are being sued for knowing about the possible risk of various cancers with the use of talcum powder, but failing to warn patients, doctors and the public about these links.
